Most couples do not come to a relationship evaluation because something is broken.
They come because something feels off and they cannot quite name it. Or because they want to understand each other better before a major transition. Or because they have been circling the same conversation for months and want a clearer picture of what is actually happening.
The Couples Compass is designed for exactly that moment.
What Is the Couples Compass?
The Couples Compass is a structured relationship evaluation, not therapy. It is a focused, one-time appointment designed to give you and your partner a clear and honest picture of where your relationship actually stands right now.
What is working. What is not. Where the genuine strengths are. Where the friction is coming from. And what, specifically, would help.
You leave with a Findings Report and a real conversation about what it means. Not a list of problems. A map.
Who Conducts the Evaluation
The Couples Compass is conducted by Joseph Wall, LMFT, LPC, LCMHC, CCTP, NCC.
Joseph’s graduate training was specifically in Marriage and Family Therapy. Relational work is not a module he added on. It is the whole point of his clinical practice. He has spent his career understanding what actually happens between people in long-term relationships, and more importantly, why.
That depth is what makes the Couples Compass worth doing. The assessments are structured. The conversation is not.
What to Expect
Before your appointment, you and your partner each complete a set of research-backed assessments independently. These look at how you communicate, how you handle conflict, how you experience trust and intimacy, and what your patterns are under stress.
At your appointment, Joseph walks you through the findings together. What the assessments revealed. What it means for your relationship specifically. What your genuine strengths are, and where there is room to grow.
You leave with a written Findings Report you can keep and refer back to.
The appointment is two hours. It is fully virtual. There is no follow-up obligation.
Who This Is For
The Couples Compass is useful at almost any stage of a relationship. It works well for couples who are:
- Approaching a major transition (moving in together, engagement, marriage, having children) and want to go in with eyes open
- Generally solid, but want to understand each other better
- Feeling stuck in a pattern they cannot quite identify
- Considering couples counseling and want clarity before committing to ongoing sessions
- Coming out of a rough stretch and want an honest read on where things stand
It is not a crisis intervention. It is not a last resort. It is a calibration tool for people who take their relationship seriously.
Common Questions
Is this the same as couples counseling?
No. The Couples Compass is a one-time evaluation, not ongoing therapy. Think of it the way you would a physical exam: the goal is a clear picture of where things stand, not a treatment plan. If counseling makes sense after the evaluation, Joseph can talk through what that would look like. But there is no pressure and no obligation.
What if only one of us wants to do it?
The Couples Compass is designed for both partners together. The value comes from seeing the picture as a pair. If your partner is on the fence, that conversation is worth having before scheduling. Joseph is happy to answer questions for either of you beforehand.
How much does it cost?
The evaluation is $800. That includes access to all pre-session assessments, a dedicated two-hour appointment with Joseph, and a written Findings Report you keep. The Couples Compass is not covered by insurance. It is a flat fee, no billing, no claims.
What happens after?
That is entirely up to you. Some couples find the evaluation gives them what they needed and go from there on their own. Others use it as the starting point for counseling. There is no required next step. Joseph will share his honest read on what might be useful, but the decision is yours.
Is it available in person?
The Couples Compass is fully virtual. Joseph’s practice is 100% virtual, which means you can do the evaluation from wherever you are in Virginia, North Carolina, or Pennsylvania.
