Finding a good therapist in D.C. is not the hard part. Finding one who actually fits is.
Virginia Counseling Services offers virtual therapy for Washington D.C. residents through two licensed clinicians: Dr. John-Mike Nelson, PhD, LPC, CACII, MAC, and Kate Lewis, LICSW. No commute. No waiting room. A real clinical relationship built around what you are actually dealing with, not a protocol handed to you before anyone knows your name.

Why Virtual Works
Telehealth is not a compromise.
For most people, a virtual session is actually easier to fit into a real life. No traffic. No parking. No time blocked out for a commute you probably won’t make on time. You connect from wherever works for you, and the clinical work is the same.
Dr. Nelson has worked with D.C. residents virtually for years. The format is familiar. The work is not.
How It Works
Virtual sessions with VCS are straightforward.
You connect through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Sessions are 50 minutes. Scheduling is handled directly through Dr. Nelson, not an algorithm. Paris, our administrative assistant, will help you get set up and answer any questions before your first appointment.
If you have never done virtual therapy before, that is fine. Most people find it easier than they expected.
John-Mike Nelson, PhD, LPC, CACII, MAC

Dr. Nelson is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Addiction Counselor II with over fifteen years of clinical experience. He holds a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision and is a Master Addiction Counselor. He is licensed in Virginia and Washington D.C.
His approach is direct, conversational, and grounded in a genuine belief that there is no single path to getting better. His job is to find the one that fits you.
Kate Lewis, LICSW

Kate Lewis is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with 20 years of experience working with adults navigating life transitions, trauma, grief, and perinatal mental health. She is licensed in both Virginia and Washington D.C. and sees D.C. residents virtually.
Kate’s work is strengths-based and collaborative. She is particularly sought out by adults managing the transition into parenthood, including the mix of emotions that can catch people off guard before, during, and after having a child. She also works with anxiety, depression, grief, and difficult relationship dynamics.
If you are a D.C. resident looking for someone with deep experience in perinatal mental health or life transitions specifically, Kate is the right fit.
